"And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." - Joshua 24:15 (NKJV)
We all make choices on a daily basis or for a lifetime decision and one of such is whom to serve. Whether idols, riches or the living God, the choices lie at our doorstep and each has far-reaching life consequences.
Joshua had passed through thick and thin as a leader of the nation Israel. In chapter 24 of the Book of Joshua, he reeled out a series of miracles that God had wrought for Israel. How the Lord had delivered them from the hands of their enemies and oppressors. The ungrateful thing they could do was to abandon that God who had seen them through thick and thin and serve some strange idols.
It is not unusual for people to forget past helpers and treat them with disdain. A reminder of history may help people wake up from their amnesia.
Can you take a moment today to count the many blessings that the Lord has bestowed upon you in the past? How he had saved you from destruction. When you do, then you may be able to make an informed decision on serving the Lord or you want to remain ungrateful. "But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD".
We owe God a lot for us to abandon Him for handmade gods. We have a responsibility to follow God's commands and serve Him faithfully. He has done so much for us. God has been our strength and our guide, and He has never forsaken us. And He will always be there to help us and guide us on the path that He has laid out for us.
No matter what challenges we face in life, we can take comfort in knowing that God is with us. We should not follow other gods because of challenges or because we are promised an affluent life by the god of this world. We can trust in God's love, mercy, and grace for guidance and strength. We can be confident that He will equip us with the tools we need to overcome any obstacle in our path without any recourse to self-help or idolatry. May we be a godly example to our families, friends, and communities of what it means to follow the Lord faithfully and with a heart filled with love and devotion to God. Amen!
