March 9: 'RESENTMENTS ARE A FORM OF HATE'

'RESENTMENTS ARE A FORM OF HATE'

Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled”. (Hebrews 12:14-15).

There is a quote on Forbes credited to the famous American newspaper columnist, George Matthew Adams. He said, “One reason why so many people are unhappy, not knowing why, is that they have burdened their minds with resentments. These evil thoughts pile right on top of happier and generous ones and smother them so that they never get expression. Resentments are a form of hate”. The evil consequences of not reconciling quickly with those who offend us are resentments.

The book of Job also attributes resentment to a form of hypocrisy. “But the hypocrites in heart heap up wrath [resentment]… (Job 36:13a). Those who have resentments often live in denial of it. In an otherwise pleasant and good person, resentment is a product of continuous bitterness that is often denied by the victim. Those who bottle up grudges are under oppression and bondage of resentments because they cry not when he [resentment] bindeth them.” (Job 36:13b).

Interestingly, almost always, resentments come from associates, relations, and neighbours. Hardly would someone hold resentment against a stranger without an encounter. Before resentments, is a relationship that has gone sour. It is not unusual to find it within a family, workplace, team or even in a Christian community.

Many saints have been defiled spiritually by resentment. It is a cancer that eats up happiness in man. It renders the victim vulnerable to spiritual attacks, strange diseases, and incurable ailment that only unreserved forgiveness and sincere reconciliation can cure.

Are you unhappy or heartbroken? Are you sick and there seem to be no cure or obvious source? If yes, you may be having some bitterness or resentments. You must ask Lord Jesus to grant you grace to forgive and let go. It is for your own good and not just for the person(s) you hold resentment against. Resentment will deny you entrance to heaven. Jesus Christ specially came to “heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives …to set at liberty those who are oppressed” by resentments. May you receive your healing and freedom today in Jesus name. Amen!

Today’s Recite: Agree with your adversary quickly …lest your adversary deliver you to the judge, …and you be thrown into prison. Matthew 5:25 (NKJV)

Today’s Morning Prayer: Oh Lord Jesus, free me from every form of resentment today. Grant me thy grace to forgive and forget. I refuse to let any resentment take away my happiness in Jesus mighty name. Amen
