THE GOOD FIGHT
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 1 Timothy 6:12 (NKJV)
If there is a good fight, then there must be a bad one. Either could still be won but the latter with unpleasant consequences. The bad fight won reminds us of the story a king named Pyrrhus of Epirus (which borders Macedonia and Thessaly). He wanted to acquire more territories to expand his kingdom to Italy. He fought and won but not without great losses such that his victory became worthless. Termed a pyrrhic victory, it was a bad fight that negates the real sense of accomplishment or hinders long-term progress and relationship. It was an unnecessary battle.
We all have interests that we tend to pursue or protect in life. And this often leads to fight for these interests. Our bible text admonishes us to only fight the good fight. The fight that is not after greedy, selfish, sensual or earthly interests but godly, eternal, and heavenly ones. Any fight that does not promote God’s love and eternal life is worthless. Bad fight breeds from ego and it brings so much irreparable losses to relationships, resources and regions. But when discerned, a good fight is worth fighting for. Example of such is a good fight of faith that leads us to obtaining and protecting the gift of eternal life. This fight is against the devil and his agents, and some are left to be fought by God Himself.
Beloved, when the enemies threaten to decimate your eternal life with sin or spiritual attacks on your career or finances, activate the good fight mode. “Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might” (Ephesians 6:10); and “fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them” (2 Kings 6:16). Remember to put on the whole armour of God which starts with the helmet of salvation on your head, to the boot of evangelism on your feet and ends with the sword of the Spirit in your hands. For God is your strength and power: “...he teacheth my hands to war” (2 Samuel 22:35).
Today’s Recite The time would fail me to tell of [those] who through faith subdued kingdoms.... out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. (Hebrew 11:32-34).
Today’s Morning Prayer: My God You are the Jehovah-nissii. I thank You for teaching me the good fight today. Fortify me with Your whole armour. Grant me grace to only fight the good fight and not the unnecessary life battles. Grant me Your wisdom to discern always. I receive Your victory in every battle in Jesus name. Amen!
