Bible Passage: Hebrew 6:13-20
That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us. (Hebrew 6:18)
A father who happened to be a pastor was counselling his son one day. At some point in their conversation, the son asked, “Is there anything that cannot change in this world?” The father answered, “Nothing.” “No condition is permanent, my dear son. It has refused to rain before. The sun has failed to shine before. People change. So, there is nothing or anyone that cannot change except…” “Except what?”, the son asked. “Except God”. Only God has never changed.
Yes, only God has the immutable things and today’s bible reading summarised them in two. They are God’s counsel and His covenant. God’s counsels are His admonitions and instructions to us. If you like, call them laws. He didn’t give Adam law; He gave him His counsel, instructions. Only God’s counsels have always stood. God’s counsels are to make us safe and secure. “I have set before you life and death…therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live” (Deuteronomy 30:19).
Divine covenant is the oath He has sworn and will still swear: His unfailing and immutable promises. “For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen (2 Corinthians 1:20). He told Noah after the flood, “this is the token of the covenant which I make between in me and you… An everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure. (Genesis 9:12,13; 2 Samuel 23:5).
His covenant is the sure and steadfast hope that can never fail, though it tarries or delayed. He promised Eve of Jesus Christ, more than six thousands years later, He fulfilled it. He promised Abraham Canaan, more than four hundred years later, it came to pass. God cannot lie. As His covenant is so His counsel. His immutable counsel declares that “the wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God” (Psalms 9:17). He promises mercy and salvation to all sinners who run to the calvary for refuge according to the covenant of the grace in His Son, Jesus Christ.

Today’s Morning Prayer. My unfailing God, I thank You for another new day. Your covenant is sure. Your promises are always yeah! I put my trust in Your counsel today. You said "Ask and it shall be given." Fulfill Your promise as answers to my petitions before You in Jesus name. Amen
