“Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things. But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:42)
Mary and Martha were sisters and believers of the gospel. Martha was a very good cook and event organizer always concerned about entertaining and making people comfortable. One day, Jesus came visiting their house and as Christ's custom was, He loved being engaged with the Word and not food. Mary loved that too and wouldn’t let Christ’s word slip over her. But Martha needed more hands in serving the table and Mary wouldnt even burge until Martha asked Jesus to tell Mary to help.
Are you like Martha? Always worried and easily troubled about others’ comfort, happiness and safety? It is not a bad thing to have such attitude. Of a truth, every home needs such a personality. But knowing when to put a stop or pause in carefulness and worries, and focus on the needful thing is very important. “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Beleivers who attend social events at the expense of God’s word at Jesus retreat are like Martha. “If I don’t attend my friend or colleague ceremony they may feel bad.” They will rather let the word of God slip than let food pass over them; ask their pastors to leave the pulpit to serve the table. But beleivers like Mary are not so. They focus on the needful thing, never to let any word of God slip over them.
Beloved, be like Mary, and David, “As the deer pants after the water brooks, so pants my soul after You, O God...” (Psalm 42:1). Let the presence of God be your delight. “O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee...” (Psalm 63:1). Christ is asking you this morning to embrace that one needful thing: EVERY WORD OF GOD. “I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst” (John 6:35)
Today’s Recite: “One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple.” (Psalm 27:4)
Today’s Morning Prayer: Oh Lord God, I thank You for a new morning of admonition. I ask for more of Your word and presence in my life. May I not miss Your presence for anything. Fill me with Your bread that I thirst and hunger no more. Let not Your Word that will transform my life pass me by in Jesus name. Amen!
