GET WISDOM

Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. Proverbs 4:7 (NKJV)

A medical student on his first day in his clinical years was asked a question by his teacher, “Tell me, young man,  what is the commonest cause of death in Nigeria?” The student was blank because he had never studied to know such before. The lecturer then attempted to help him with a clue said, “Remember, common things occur commonly”. The student reluctantly then answered, “Malaria?”. The teacher affirmed, “Yes, that is correct. That’s common sense, right?”.

From today’s verse, wisdom is fundamental to life. Therefore, entrance of God’s word gives understanding to the simple (Psalm 119:130).  The golden rule to wisdom is to keep things simple and fundamental.  The philosophers also say the first principles is “the first causes from which a thing is known”. It means the simplest fundamental fact known to be true. Hence, the first principle of wisdom is “never assume” - look for the most basic true fact. And the true fact is often found as common sense or by asking as in the story above.

It is a grave error to assume that getting wise is guaranteed by intelligence even though both are related. You don’t have to be a genius to be wise and a genius can be wise too, not because of his high IQ. Though intelligence can help improve wisdom - only if put to use.

Dear friend, if you will get the gift of wisdom: (i) daily read and take the word of God simpleThe Lord giveth wisdom; out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding (Proverbs 2:6

(ii). Make sure you don’t sin against God - the source of Wisdom. You become a fool when you flout His commandment. Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee (Psalm 119:11).

(iii). Learn and Read widely from other people God has endowed with wisdom before you and will endow after you. Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding (Proverbs 3:5).

(iv) Form the habit of asking. Habit of asking God in prayers; habit of asking others  and also asking yourself what, why, when, where and how.

Today’s Recite: If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5

Today’s Morning Prayer: O God of creation, I come today for Your wisdom. Grant me the gift of wisdom in my career, family, business and ministry. Keep me faithful to You in manner of truthfulness and holiness. May I not fall from the zenith of wisdom to the pit of foolishness in Jesus mighty name I pray. Amen.

Today’s Hymn: Deeper, Deeper

Today’s Read Me: Numbers 29 –31
