“We will drink no wine, for Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, saying, ‘You shall drink no wine, you nor your sons, forever. - Jeremiah 35:6 (NKJV)
In an obedience consistency test, the Children of Jonadab the Rechabites were presented with wine to drink but they won’t take a sip because they will never break the family tenet.
Obedience refers to compliance with rules, laws, or commands. It is an act which manifests respect for God, and a deliberate decision to submit the constituted authority. Consistency is the steadfast adherence to the same principles. It is about maintaining a set of reliable behaviours over time.
Daily, we are constantly presented with obedience consistency tests. From temptation to sin to compliance with civil, communal or church rules, God watches our actions and inactions. Inconsistency in obedience or faith is a sign of an unstable soul. Unstable souls are not fit for the kingdom. Jesus said, “No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” ( Luke 9:62).
The first step to passing the obedience consistency test is to understand the rules. Secondly, mind the same rules. Paul admonished, “Let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing” (Philippians 3:16). Thirdly, respect authority. Respect begets respect. If you want to rule, start obeying. And lastly, be disciplined.
Can God vouch for your consistency like the Rechabites or Abraham? “For I know him [Abraham], that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD”. God loves and rewards consistent obedience. If the Rechabites could submit to a leader who was merely a mortal, how much more should you not obey God who has so much more to offer you? Heed the advice of the devout forefathers and elders; you will prosper by doing so. And much more let us obey God consistently, and we shall be eternally rewarded.
